From October 3 to 5, the XLI National Congress of Pharmacology took place in Palma de Mallorca, where advances in pharmacological and therapeutic research carried out by Spanish Pharmacologists were presented.
Within the scientific program of the congress, a session entitled: “Novel approaches for the design, development, and delivery of drugs” was held in which the young researcher Irene Rodríguez-Clemente belonging to the research group of the UCLM-CSIC Associated Unit “Neurodeath”, which participates in the research project of the Complementary Plan of “Biotechnology applied to Health”, presented the results on the use of nanoparticles as siRNA transport agents as a new therapy for glioblastoma.
The results indicate that this approach is capable of very markedly reducing the cellular levels of proteins that participate in the proliferation and survival mechanisms of tumor cells and transporting siRNA into the brain and spinal cord, which opens a new therapeutic perspective for diseases of the nervous system.
This research is part of line of action 5 of the Complementary Plans project: “Development of nanodrugs, biodistribution, toxicity and therapeutic actions in pathology models.” The round table was moderated by Prof. Valentín Ceña, coordinator of the Complementary Plans project in Castilla-La Mancha.
